The Machame Route — nicknamed the Whiskey Route — is the most popular path on Kilimanjaro for experienced trekkers. It approaches from the south-west, takes you through five ecological zones, and offers outstanding views of the Shira Plateau and the Western Breach.

We recommend seven days on Machame. The extra day on the mountain measurably improves summit success rates and makes the experience less of an endurance event and more of a journey.

The route day by day

Day 1 — Machame Gate to Machame Camp (3,100 m)

The forest section. You gain 1,200 metres through dense montane rainforest. Expect mud, birdsong, and the first test of your waterproofs. Camp is in the heather zone; dinner in the mess tent with the whole team.

Day 2 — Machame Camp to Shira Camp (3,840 m)

The heather and moorland opens up. Big views of the southern ice field appear. The Shira Plateau is one of the most dramatic landscapes on the mountain — flat, vast, and completely unexpected.

Day 3 — Shira Camp to Barranco Camp (3,960 m) via Lava Tower (4,630 m)

The acclimatisation day. You climb to Lava Tower — high enough to stress your body — then descend to Barranco. You will feel the altitude at Lava Tower. That is exactly the point. Arrive at Barranco feeling better than when you left Shira: the acclimatise-high, sleep-low principle working for you.

Day 4 — Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp (4,040 m) via Barranco Wall

The wall. It sounds dangerous; it is not. It is a scramble — hands and feet on rock — that most people find the most enjoyable section of the route. Takes 1–2 hours. Views from the top of the wall are exceptional.

Day 5 — Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp (4,680 m)

Short walking day. Rest, hydrate, eat as much as you can manage. Barafu is exposed, cold, and windswept. Sleep early — summit push begins around midnight.

Day 6 — Barafu to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m) to Mweka Camp (3,100 m)

The summit day. You wake at midnight, dress in every layer you own, and start walking in the dark. The pace is almost comically slow — pole pole. Sunrise at Stella Point (5,732 m) is one of the great sights in Africa. Uhuru Peak is another hour beyond. The descent to Mweka Camp takes 4–5 hours. Your knees will feel it.

Day 7 — Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate

A short walk out through the forest. Certificates presented at the gate. Certificate of Summit for those who reached Uhuru Peak. Certificate of Attempt for those who turned back — because every attempt on this mountain deserves respect.
