The Marangu Route — the only route on Kilimanjaro with hut accommodation — is known as the Coca-Cola Route. It is the most accessible route logistically and the only one where you sleep in a bed rather than a tent.
However, Marangu has the lowest summit success rate of the main routes. The reason is simple: five days does not give most climbers enough time to acclimatise. We strongly recommend the six-day option. The extra day at Horombo Hut for acclimatisation makes a measurable difference.
What makes Marangu different
You sleep in bunk-bed dormitory huts with mattresses, pillows, and blankets provided. You do not need a sleeping bag rated for extreme cold. The huts have basic cafeterias and dining rooms. For climbers who find camping uncomfortable, or who simply prefer a fixed roof, this is the route.
The trail itself is less scenic than Machame or Lemosho. You ascend and descend the same path. But it is a genuine Kilimanjaro experience — the forest, the moorland, the alpine desert, and the summit push are all here.
The route day by day
Day 1 — Marangu Gate (1,860 m) to Mandara Hut (2,720 m)
Five kilometres through montane forest. Shorter than most people expect. Use the afternoon to rest and explore the Maundi Crater, a thirty-minute walk from the hut.
Day 2 — Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut (3,720 m)
The landscape opens from forest into moorland. The views to Mawenzi Peak begin. A longer day — twelve kilometres.
Day 3 (6-day route) — Acclimatisation at Horombo Hut
A rest day that is not a rest day. Walk up to 4,000 metres and return. Your body adapts; your confidence builds.
Day 4 — Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut (4,720 m)
The saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo. Barren, cold, and exposed. Nine kilometres across plateau. Arrive at Kibo Hut, eat as much as you can, sleep early.
Day 5 — Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m) to Horombo Hut
Summit push begins at midnight. Steep, loose scree to Gilman's Point on the crater rim, then the final walk to Uhuru Peak. Descend all the way back to Horombo the same day — a very long day.
Day 6 — Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate
The walk out. Certificates at the gate.
